Minor League Update + Game Recap

Sorry I couldn't update the blog yesterday, was busy. I will have lineups for today's game as soon as possible. Here's the game recap from yesterday:
Cleveland, Ohio- The Yankees, coming in to yesterday's game were one of the hottest teams in the league, winning 13 of their last 16 games. However, yesterday's game had a new twist to it: the addition of Jorge Posada. The combo of A-rod, Matsui and Posada haven't been in the same lineup together since June of last year. And the Yankee offense, with the hitting streaks of 10+ games continuing for Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira, came through early on off Cliff Lee(2-6), and gave the Yanks a 3-1 Win. Andy Pettitte(5-1), pitched a ok game, giving up only one run in 5 innings of work.He pitched too many pitches, got injured(he had back issues, said he will make his next start) but managed to hang on. Then, the player of the game, had to go to Alfredo Aceves, who pitched 3 beautiful innings in order to maintain the lead. Then Mo got the Save(10) and the Pettitte-MO combo now has the MLB record for most saves for a victory with 58 times. Dennis Eckersley and Bob Welsh have 57. And the Red Sox lost to the Blue Jays 5-3, which means the Yankees are in sole possession of first place in the AL East.

Notes: Kevin Cash was optioned back to Scranton for Jorge coming up..... Xavier Nady and Jose Molina will start their throwing programs this week, Monday and Tuesday respectively..... The Yankees are not considering Joba Chamberlain into the Bullpen, many media members were asking that throughout the year so far.....Melky Cabrera could be back in the lineup as soon as Monday...

Yankees are hoping to acquire at the trade deadline....

either George Sherill(former closer of the Orioles) or Jose Valverde(closer for the Houston Astros), according to reports from 1050 ESPN Radio NY.
I wouldn't mind taking either of them, but would rather take Sherill because he has pitched in the AL and is having better numbers than Valverde. I've seen both last year, I'd prefer Valverde but Sherill was also good. So let's see what the Yankees do near the trade deadline.

Notes from today:
Jorge Posada played 6 innings in an extended spring training game and will be activated tommorow, no word on who's going down.....Melky Cabrera showed improvement today, according to GM Brian Cashman, and will not go on DL. However, he's out for this series vs Cleveland.

Game Recap

I'll do my recap now instead of tommorow.
Arlington, Texas- AJ Burnett was used to throwing pies to the guys who get the walkoff hits, like Melky Cabrera or Johnny Damon. However, he deserved to get pied after the stellar peformance he put up tonight against the Rangers. He was filthy, striking out 7 in 6 innings of 3 hit ball. The Yankees also put up an offensive showing putting up 9 Runs, that include 2 HR from Hideki Matsui , one from Mark Teixeira, and one from Robinson Cano. Derek Jeter also had a good night by going 3-4 with a RBI. The only Yankee hitter that didn't get a hit in this game was Johnny Damon, who went 0-5. Jose Veras, pitched terrible in relief of Burnett giving up 2 Runs, on a 2-run shot by Ian Kinsler. But David Robertson and Chien-Ming Wang came in and put an end to this game. Wang looked great today, it seemed like his sinker was working like it used to and pitched two solid innings.
Our Player of the Game award goes to AJ Burnett for his solid performance and now will get the mock WWE belt in his locker after the game.
WP: AJ Burnett(3-2)
LP: Derek Holland(1-2)
Notes: Matsui was PR for in the 9th by Berroa.... Damon almost got injured like Melky when he collided with the wall to make a nice catch. Day off for the Yankees tommorow
So the Yankees take 2 out of 3 from the Rangers and now will head out to Cleveland for a 4 game series on Friday with Andy Pettitte(4-1, 4.30) vs Cliff Lee(2-5, 3.04)
Have a great night everyone!

Today's Lineup(via Pete Abraham's blog)

YANKEES (26-20)
Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Cano 2B
Matsui DH
Swisher RF
Gardner CF
Cash C

As you all know, Melky Cabrera was hurt yesterday attempting to get a fly ball but missed and his shoulder landed on the wall. I was told that he is fine and that there going to go Day-to Day on him. Also, as reported by the AP, Jorge Posada was in a 5 inning intrasquad game and he might come back as soon as Friday when the Yankees play against the Indians.

Today's pitching matchup
A.J Burnett(2-2, 5.28 ERA) vs Derek Holland(1-1, 4.82 ERA)
Today is the rubber game between these two teams, so the Yankees are looking to take 2 out of 3 from the Rangers.
Update 7:06 PM: Injury Updates from Pete:
Melky Cabrera: He had an MRI and will be sent back to New York tomorrow to be examined by team doctor Chris Ahmad. The initial diagnosis is that he will be out 5-7 days. If it’s more than that, they will probably DL him and call up an infielder.
Brian Bruney: Dr. James Andrews checked him out and he came up clean. No ligament issue. He has a flexor muscle strain and whatever pain he still has is a residual of that. He will rest and start a throwing program. Because Bruney fibbed about how he felt last time, you can bet he’ll out at least another 2-3 weeks at least.
Jorge Posada: He will be activated on Friday in Cleveland unless he gets hit by a bus in Tampa. He’s probably only going to work out tomorrow. Joe Girardi it was a “strong possibility” that Posada would be activated which is way of saying, “Posada will be activated.”

Game Recap(from Mlb.com because of late game yesterday)

After Yanks wait out rain, Joba struggles
Bombers tie it, but relievers allow late-inning runs to Rangers
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com
ARLINGTON -- Joba Chamberlain may have hit himself harder than the Rangers did, firing harsh words into the mirror after coming out flat following a lengthy rain delay.
Chamberlain waited out an impressive lightning storm and couldn't put on a better show. With lower velocity than usual, Chamberlain struggled and his bullpen backup couldn't keep the game close, as the Rangers defeated the Yankees, 7-3, on Tuesday at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
"I could go on for days and days to tell you how bad I was," Chamberlain said. "Plain and simple, I was terrible. There's no getting around it. I've got to do a better job of keeping my team in the game and not try to battle myself the whole time."
Chamberlain allowed three runs in just four innings, lifted after 84 pitches because of the intensity of his workload to record those 12 outs. Clocked only in the low 90s, he refused to use either the delay or the bruised right knee he suffered last week in New York as excuses.
"I didn't see him favoring it," manager Joe Girardi said. "He never got it going, he never got in a rhythm in a sense. It wasn't like he was getting pounded, but we just felt that he worked so hard in those four innings that we were going to make a change."
The Yankees rallied to tie the game against Rangers starter Kevin Millwood, highlighted by a Mark Teixeira solo homer into the familiar right-field porch in the fifth inning, but Alfredo Aceves allowed three runs in relief and Phil Coke was hit for the second of two Chris Davis home runs.
After waiting out a delay of two hours and 24 minutes that featured heavy thunderstorms and golf-ball-sized hail, Chamberlain allowed New York to slip behind early, another chapter in his continuing first-inning struggles.
"I had to battle all night," Chamberlain said. "It's just one of those things. You're going to have those days where you have to battle and compete, and try to minimize the damage as much as you can."
With Chamberlain one out away from escaping a first inning that featured a standout defensive play by Alex Rodriguez, diving back to third base to catch Ian Kinsler off the bag, Texas scored twice on Marlon Byrd's line drive to right field, sending Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz scurrying home.
"It's all irritating, especially Alex doing a great job to make that play," Chamberlain said. "It wasn't a bad pitch to Marlon. He just put a good swing on it, and he did what he was supposed to do."
Chamberlain has permitted 11 runs (10 earned) in nine first innings this season, a 10.00 ERA. Girardi said that Chamberlain's experimental phase of warming up additionally was in place, and the Yankees continue to wonder why he has trouble getting going.
"He said he warmed up great," Girardi said. "He just had a hard time commanding his fastball. Maybe that's a result of only throwing one inning in the last 10 days because of his injury, but physically, he was fine. He just wasn't sharp."
Davis took Chamberlain deep onto the center-field berm for a 411-foot solo homer, his 11th, leading off the fourth inning. That would be the right-hander's final frame, bowing out after he was charged with three runs on four hits, walking four and striking out five.
The Yankees made it a game in the fifth, when Teixeira, a former Ranger, slugged his 14th home run to cut it to 3-1. Hideki Matsui added an RBI double off the right-field wall in the sixth, chasing home Brett Gardner, and Francisco Cervelli tied the game with a sharp single into shallow center.
But with Millwood out of the game after 5 2/3 innings -- and two balls off his pitching hand -- the Yankees were unable to inflict any damage on the Rangers' bullpen. New York left 12 men on base, including a seventh-inning spot where Nick Swisher hit into a double play with the bases loaded and one out.
"I thought we hit some balls hard," Girardi said. "I thought we had good at-bats off him. They came back to bite us a little bit tonight. But I thought we swung the bats pretty well; we just didn't get the one big hit."
That permitted the Rangers to crack through against the Yankees' bullpen, as Girardi opted to go with Aceves over Chien-Ming Wang, who is waiting in relief for an opportunity to continue his starting career.
Girardi said that he had Aceves warming mid-inning in the fourth, which is something they refuse to do with Wang as they try to keep his situation as normal as possible.
"Ace has been throwing the ball great for us, and it was just the time that we felt we'd go to Ace," Girardi said. "Now, Chien-Ming Wang will be the guy we go to tomorrow."
Aceves allowed a run-scoring single to Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the sixth before allowing two hits to open the seventh.
Hamilton logged an infield groundout and David Murphy lifted a sacrifice fly against Coke, increasing the Rangers' lead to three runs in support of winning pitcher Jason Jennings. Davis added his second homer of the game to lead off the eighth against Coke.
The loss may have also been costly for the Yankees, who lost Melky Cabrera in the bottom of the first inning to a strained right shoulder after he crashed into the center-field fence chasing Kinsler's triple. Gardner had a three-hit, three-steal game for New York in his place.
"I feel better right now, because I did ice three times and a couple of exercises," Cabrera said through an interpreter. "I think it might be a couple of days."

Update 7:08 PM: From the Associated Press(AP)
New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada played three innings of defense during a simulated game Tuesday in Tampa.
Sidelined since straining his right hamstring while sliding in a game against Boston May 4, also batted in the simulated game. The five-time AL All-Star threw to second from behind the plate and ran the bases after the game.
Outfielder Xavier Nady (right elbow ligament) and infielder Cody Ransom (right quadriceps) also batted.

Manager Joe Girardi also spoke to Pete Abraham and he said that Posada will play again tomorrow and seems to be getting closer. There are no plans for him to play rehab games with any affiliates.
He also told Pete that Catcher Jose Molina that he is behind Posada in his rehab program. Pete asked Girardi if he was thinking about keeping Cervelli on the roster after they come back, and he said they would consider it. Jorge and OF Xavier Nady could play in a minor league game this week.

From Mlbtraderumors.com writer Tim Dierkes

Yankees reliever Brian Bruney still has an aching elbow, and he's scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews tomorrow. Bruney's elbow issues date back to 2004, when he was Arizona's closer of the future (they eventually designated him for assignment in May of '06, allowing him to sign a minor league deal with the Yankees).
With Bruney out indefinitely, Joe Pawlikowski of River Ave. Blues thinks the Yankees need to acquire setup man in the coming weeks. He speculates on Chad Qualls, Jose Valverde, Russ Springer, and Huston Street. Other names to consider: Danys Baez, George Sherrill, Ron Mahay, Matt Thornton, and old friends Octavio Dotel and Tom Gordon.
There are plenty of internal options as well. As Marc Carig of the Newark Star-Ledger notes, the Yanks already have a tough Phil Hughes vs. Chien-Ming Wang situation in the rotation. Wang will work out of the pen for now. Plus there's the discussion Pawlikowski wanted no part of: Joba Chamberlain to the bullpen.

I would like to get maybe Valverde(maybe not because he's injured), Street, Sherill or Thornton to be our set-up man. Hopefully we dont have to give up much to get one of them if we even attempt to.

Game Recap

Arlington, Texas- It seemed like a perfect summer day at the ballpark. It was nearly 90 degress, Memorial Day weekend was being celebrated and the Rangers were the hottest team in the league. But so were the Yankees and they made the Rangers pay early on. The Yankees scored 2 runs even before Phil Hughes(3-2) pitched. But he didn't need any help at all, as he was dominant the whole game, going 8 strong innings as the Yankees win 11-1. Arod also had a very good day at the plate going 5-5 with 4 Rbi. He was being booed bascially the whole game but that didn't bother him at all. Matt Harrison(4-4) pitched 5 innings, giving up 11 hits on 7 runs. The only HR of the game was given up by Alfredo Aceves and Nelson Cruz gave the Rangers the only run of the day with his swing.
Hughes' Line: 8 IP, 3 Hits, 0 runs, 101 pitches
Aceves' Line: 1 IP, 1 hit, 1 run, 8 pitches

Notes: Bruney on DL, pitcher to be activated tommorow.... Kevin Cash has his first multi-hit game as a Yankee going 3 for 5....As Melky Cabrera was rounding second on a line drive into the gap, he slipped causing him to go to second. It caused laughs from the team especially from Robinson Cano, who was imitating him after the play.... Swisher also had a good day going 1 for 4 with 3 Rbi.

Thanks to Pete for the lineups
Game at 2:05 PM on YES.

I really don't like this lineup at all today, as the bottom 1/3 of the lineup can't really hit except for Pena. I don't know why Cash is still playing because he is an automatic out at the plate. Swisher is also becoming an auto out too. I'll try to find out more about why Jeter is DH'ing today.
Update 1:02 PM: Sad news for Bruney. He's going on the DL, another pitcher will probably be up tommorow.

Yankee Notebook(by Daily News' Kristie Ackert)

Bruney still not pain free
New York-Right-handed Reliever Brian Bruney seems resigned to pitching with pain.
The Yankees' set-up man played catch yesterday for the first time since having tests to determine the cause of the lingering pain in his right elbow. Bruney said the pain was still there, but is coming to the conclusion that he may pitch with pain for the rest of his career.
"This is my 10th year in professional baseball, all of it coming out of the pen-maybe that is what I am now," Bruney said. "Maybe this is how it will be."
Bruney said he threw 35 to 45 pitches yesterday and every one was accompained by a short burst of pain. But he said he was avaliable to pitch tonight against the Rangers despite the discomfort.
"It's so quick, it's hard to describe it. It's hard to pinpoint where and what it is," he said. "It's frustrating."
After spending nearly a month on the disabled list with a strained elbow, Bruney pitched one inning Tuesday night against the Orioles. But after a day's rest, he continued to feel pain. But after a day's rest, he continued to feel pain. He went for an MRI Thrusday night and had an arthrogram-an MRI with dye injected into the elbow-the following morning. The tests showed no damage to the ligament, but also gave no indication of why he feels pain.
Bruney said his agent is sending the results of his MRI to different doctors hoping for new ideas, but he was not optimistic.
"There are guys who have pitched like that and been successful,"Bruney said. "It's about finding a program that makes it feel a little better."
After missing 85 games last season with a foot injury, Bruney has appeared in just 10 games this season.
RHP Joba Chamberlain, who left Thrusday night's game in the first inning after taking a line drive off his right knee, threw his regular bullpen session yesterday and said he will make his scheduled start tommorow.
Chien-Ming Wang, who was activated from the DL on Friday to help out a relief corps that was worn out by Chamberlain's early exit, will remain in the bullpen, according to Girardi. "Right now, he's just in our bullpen,"Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He will be a backup to Joba if he cant make his start. Right now he's in the bullpen anf we're on rotation."
Catcher Jorge Posada(right hamstring strain), outfielder Xavier Nady(right elbow strain, infielder Cody Ransom(strained right quadriceps) and Catcher Jose Molina(strained left quadriceps) left after batting practice yesterday for the Yankees training complex in Tampa, Fla., to begin "intensifying," their rehabilitation programs, according to Girardi.
Girardi said it's possible Posada could return this week.
"We have to get him in some games and we have to get the hammy to 100 percent,"the manager said. "He shouldn't need too many games to catch. The end of the week, it's still possible, but it might be pushed back a little bit. We have to see how he does the next couple of days."
Thanks to the Star Ledger and Kristie for posting this information.
I would like to wish a Happy Memorial Day for all those soldiers, past and present, who have served our country.
Today we got a day game at Arlington Ballpark in Texas, between the Yanks and the Rangers.
Phil Hughes(2-2, 7.06 Era) will take the mound for the Yankees, while Matt Harrison(a lefty) will take the hill for the Rangers(4-3, 4.71 ERA). Lineups will be posted in a bit.
